Samuel Bonnet

Guitarist | Composer | Educator

Are you a jazz student who feels limited by flatpicking and would like to develop your fingerpicking skills to create your own arrangements of standards for solo guitar or simply improve your ability to improvise or accompany in a Jazz or Latin context ?

Convinced that you can play anything with classical technique (except maybe metal!😂) and a good knowledge of jazz harmony, over the years I've developed a flexible method to help you master the world of jazz standards and improvisation through theoretical exercises and practical games on the instrument.

Here's my story in a nutshell... I started playing classical guitar at the age of 8 and jazz at 13. My very eclectic musical background has led me to play just about every style (except maybe metal😂) and today I play and have a career mainly playing jazz on nylon-string guitars with my fingers (the so-called classical or fingertsyle technique).

Feeling a bit of an outsider in both the classical and jazz worlds, during the pandemic I decided to pursue in-depth research into classical-jazz hybridity through a DESS degree at the Université de Sherbrooke. At the same time, I built a custom hybrid guitar with the help of a luthier and even published an article on the subject in a renowned music education journal.

Inspirational Quotes

Classical technique is the most expressive way of playing the instrument
— Ralph Towner
I like to go beyond the simple play of melodic lines. I like to bring in the harmony and the bass lines, doing all the arrangements myself. Classical techniques open the door to all these ways of playing.
— Gene Bertoncini

TESTIMONIES

Samuel Bonnet was warmly recommended to me by my wife, a music teacher and violinist. Performer, composer and teacher, Samuel is passionate about the world of the guitar. He transmits to me the pleasure of deepening technique and, above all, the spirit of jazz experimentation. His teaching is personalized, stimulating, rigorous and caring. I wish him every success in his future endeavors.
